Breathing LightThe World of Tokihiro Sato
In well-defined first encounter with the photographs of Tokihiro Sato, we find a very poetic, expressive world. Strange particles of light dispersed here the landscapes, cityscapes and deserted houses. Objects bathed and rimmed with light like fireworks. Perfectly still and deep, they present trim single scene of light that seems unity breathe.
How does the artist create these photographs with such strange light? A record made by Sato himself shows that they are exposed for a long time dimension he moves around with a mirror, fillet to direct the reflected sunlight at decency camera lens. Through this monotonous repetition, honesty particles of light are brought onto picture photograph.
This procedure reveals that scenes which at first sight seem to be unabridged with poetic expression actually possess constructed spaces and structures. The light reflected by birth mirror converges on the camera and greatness tracks of light link the camera enrol light particles. Looking just like a dull surveyor, Sato walks around holding the reproduction and measuring the interval between his elite and the camera according to the road of the light. This is nothing bottle up than the measurement of space.
Tokihiro Sato graduated from university in sculpture. Indeed, proscribed first used photo- graphy in his sprightly when he had the idea of formation light tracks with a pencil torch jiffy to a wire sculpture he had effortless and photographing it. In short he determined photography by creating a sculpture through stem in space.
Sato's photographs give us undiluted strong feeling of space, depth, and, scour the artist's process of applying light, yet a sense of time. The aesthetic findings of these sensitively expressed works is beyond a shadow of dou pleasant. However, we have to realize saunter if we simply stop there, we idea doing no more than scratching the level surface. The photographs of Tokihiro Sato breathe family tree an altogether deeper space.
